The Role:
DIRECTION RECEIVED AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
This position receives functional direction from, and reports directly to, the P&C Engineering and Package Leads within the HVdc Specialties team. The incumbent will provide protection & controls engineering support to the Team in order to facilitate effective project delivery.

The incumbent is expected to exercise a high level of personal initiative, sound judgement, and technical expertise in carrying out the duties and responsibilities. Will report and be accountable to an Area Manager. May also be involved in all work scopes within the HVdc Specialties team and therefore could also periodically receive direction from other Area Managers, in particular Synchronous Condensers, HVdc Converters &Transition Compounds, ac Switchyards, and
System Integration &Telecommunications.

PURPOSE AND SUMMARY OF SCOPE:
Working within the Project Delivery Team, and with accountability residing with the Area Manager, the Senior Protection & Controls Engineer's primary responsibility is to provide protection & controls engineering support and expertise in the role of Owner's engineer related to the design, construction and commissioning of the HV Stations. The incumbent will participate in the oversight of the Contractor in order to ensure compliance with all technical requirements and on-time and on-budget delivery.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Major areas of engagement are in the design, construction and commissioning of HVdc Specialties installations. The duties and job functions of the Senior Protection & Controls Engineer shall include, but are not limited to the following:
* Provide protection &controls engineering leadership to complete the scope of work
* Complete detailed technical reviews of Contractor submittals and technical data (including, but not limited to, drawings, specifications, design studies, technical reports, etc.) to verify conformity with the Scope of Work, project design criteria, Client standards, codes, practices, operating philosophy, good utility practice and constructability
* o meet Project Goals for Safety, Operability, Reliability and Environmental Performance
* Review plans for and/or participate in shop surveillance and factory acceptance tests (FATs)
* Explore, analyze, and introduce new design concepts, solutions, and innovative methods for achieving completion
* Ensure opportunities for improvements to all aspects of performance (safety, environment, cost, schedule, quality, operations, reliability) are actively pursued and championed
* Organize and lead meetings, related to project delivery aspects, working to resolve issues that could impact overall performance objectives
* Liaise with Change and Technical Interface Engineer to ensure interfaces are progressed in a timely manner
* Lead in owner's acceptance during commissioning and turnover stages
* Visit Sites) as often as is necessary to monitor compliance with the specifications, prepare independent site visit reports and inform functional groups of deviations (Quality, Completions, construction management)
* Provide technical leadership in the resolution of post commissioning start-up issues
* Provide input (observations, analysis) for warranty claims

Our client, a diverse Canadian Energy Company, plans new developments estimated at $12+ Billion over the next 5 years.This position is open to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents only. Residents of Newfoundland & Labrador will be given first consideration for this position.

Essential Skills / Qualifications:
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) Degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
* Minimum 8-10 years of experience, in technical as well as construction roles.
* ~ Background in protection &controls engineering and design, particularly in the HVdc field.
* Electric utility experience, particularly in the area of high voltage substations, is a definite asset.
* Familiarity with codes and standards applicable with the discipline such as IEEE, IEC, CSA, etc.
* Self-starter, able to prioritize tasks, put plans in place, and follow through with delivery.
* Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
* Proven interpersonal, communications, leadership and team skills.

JOB REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, ETC.:
* Must be able to work effectively as a member of the Project Delivery Team within a multi-functional team environment.
* This position requires the ability to accept responsibility and make decisions in a highly technical environment.
* Worksite will be Lower Churchill Project Office, St. John's, NL (primary) and potentially construction Sites, including Soldiers Pond, Muskrat Falls, Churchill Falls, Forteau and Shoal Cove.
* Occasional travel out of Province and out of country for shop surveillance and factory acceptance tests.
* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and communicate with other team members.
* Proven interpersonal, communications, leadership and team skills.
* Excellent problem solving skills.
